Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Revere portion of the Northern Strand Community Trail on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Those interested in participating in the cleanup, which is organized by Bike to the Sea, Inc. in Partnership with the City of Revere, can park in Linden Square over the city line in Malden, near the intersection of Wesley and Lynn streets. From there, they should follow signs along the newly paved trail east toward Revere and Route 1.

The cleanup will include picking up debris along the trail and painting over graffiti on the underside of the Route 1 bridge. Participants should wear long pants, boots and gloves. Bike to the Sea, Inc, will provide tools and snacks. Children 16, and younger, must be accompanied by an adult.

The Revere portion of the trail runs along the Rumney Marsh and offers scenic vistas of the natural landscape.

Since 1993 Bike to the Sea has been working to create the Northern Strand Trail: a trail free of cars from the Malden/Everett area of Massachusetts to the beaches in Revere, Lynn and Nahant.

The trail in Everett, Malden and Saugus has been built. The Revere segment of the trail will connect four miles of paved trail in Malden and Everett with 2.5 miles of trail in Saugus.  Bike to the Sea, Inc. is working with the City of Revere, using funds from the Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), to hire contractors to build a gravel trail. It is expected to be open to the public for bike riding, walking and other healthy activities in the fall of 2015.

Last year, the City of Malden extended its completed paved trail across Linden Square to the Revere line.  Once the Revere section is complete, 7.5 miles of trail will run from Everett, through Malden, Revere, and Saugus to the border of Lynn. Lynn officials are still considering whether the city will build its segment of the trail and Bike to the Sea, Inc. is working with Lynn grassroots groups in hopes of making that happen.
