Revere Section is Officially Open

Officials stand before a ribbon on the bike holding signs which state "Bike Trail Open."
Another milestone was met this week when the Revere portion of the trail was officially opened, creating 7.5 miles of trail from Everett to the Lynn border.

Despite threatening thunderstorms, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday night to officially open the Revere portion of the Northern Strand Community Trail.

Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo, along with other municipal officials, joined members of Bike to the Sea on Salem Street near the Franklin Street intersection. The Revere segment of the trail runs along the Rumney Marsh and connects four miles of paved trail in Malden and Everett with 2.5 miles of trail in Saugus. Now that it’s complete, 7.5 miles of trail runs from Everett, through Malden, Revere, and Saugus to the border of Lynn.

Lynn officials are still considering whether the city will build its segment of the trail and Bike to the Sea, Inc. is working with Lynn grassroots groups in hopes of making that happen.

The Revere section of the Northern Strand Community Trail was covered with a compacted, soil, recycled asphalt material in July. The City of Revere then installed a crosswalk on Salem Street so that the trail could be officially open for the public. Bike to the Sea, Inc. worked with the City of Revere, using funds from the Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), to hire contractors to build the trail.

Since 1993 Bike to the Sea has been working to create the Northern Strand Trail: a trail free of cars from the Malden/Everett area of Massachusetts to the beaches in Revere, Lynn and Nahant.
