2024 Year in Review

Bike to the Sea stretched our wings in 2024. In all, we held over 65 events to promote healthy recreation, advocate for active transportation safety, and support our fellow community members. The calendar was anchored by our popular annual bike rides on the Northern Strand Trail, but we expanded our reach and our impact in all directions. We held more rides, walks, runs, clean-ups, partnerships, grant-funded projects, and advocacy for safer walk/bike infrastructure than ever before.

Highlights from 2024

We celebrated the opening of the Rt. 16 underpass in Everett (mural for the retaining wall coming in 2025!) and the return of separated bike lanes and flex posts on Rt. 99 and the Alford Street Bridge into Boston.

We participated in the groundbreaking of the Northern Strand Trail extension between the Lynn Linear Park and Nahant Beach – construction is well underway already!

We completed our first MassTrails grant-funded project to implement the Mystic Highlands Greenway between Stoneham, Wakefield, Melrose, and Malden.

And of course, we launched our Bike Kitchen, a place to build community while building and repairing bicycles. Our volunteers served almost 400 guests and donated over 60 refurbished bikes this year.

We participated in initial route reconnaissance for improved multi-use paths to connect Chelsea and Everett to the Northern Strand Trail, in partnership with GreenRoots Chelsea. We also supported the creation of new Walk/Bike advocacy and advisory organizations in Revere, Malden, and Everett, and joined partners to advocate for Greenways expansions throughout the greater Boston region.

We led our first ever off-road bike rides in Lynn Woods and Rumney Marsh with our Intro to Gravel rides.

We held our first ever “Crankgsiving” food drive in partnership with Bread of Life Malden, and raised over 575 pounds of food.

We held our first ever trail running events in Melrose and Malden in partnership with Marathon Sports.
