Leap Day Cleanup and Geocaching on the NST

February 29 @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm

Leap Day is an event so rare, it comes around only once every four years!

To make 2024 a memorable one, local Geocachers, Kelly Braverman, and Patrick and Gavin Bibbins (Geocaching names: CuriousKDB and MedfordPnG), have teamed up with Bike to the Sea (B2C) to celebrate with a Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) event!

What is a CITO, and what’s Geocaching?

A CITO is just like the regular Northern Strand Trail cleanups that B2C holds throughout the year, but with the added fun and challenge of finding Geocaches.

In its simplest form, Geocaching involves finding hidden “caches” by using GPS navigation. There are currently more than 3 million hidden all over the world, so if you’re an outdoorsperson, you’ve probably passed by tons of them without even knowing.

Many cachers use a smartphone and the free Geocaching App to find them. If you want to log some finds, we recommend you download it and set up an account before attending.

For those who have never done it before this will be a great opportunity to learn. There will be many highly experienced cachers there, and just like B2C members, they’re always excited to share their knowledge and skills.

Meet at the B2C Bike Kitchen

The event will be based at the B2C Bike Kitchen located at 158 Canal St. in Malden, (across the street from CHA Malden Care Center), and is directly on the Northern Strand.

  • If you are driving, there is ample free on-street parking on the west side of the street.
  • By MBTA, the Malden Center Orange Line station is ½ mile away. If you bring a trash bag with you you can pick up trash along the way and drop it off when you arrive.
  • The Northern Strand extends from Lynn to Everett, so coming by bike is a great way to extend your coverage during the cleanup.

Bike to the Sea will provide tools, supplies, trail maps, and refreshments, but bring your own work gloves.

We look forward to seeing you there, and you can contact Patrick at pat@biketothesea.org with any questions.
