In partnership with Bread of Life, a Malden-based social services organization, we held our second annual Cranksgiving two-wheeled food drive on Saturday, November 15th from 10am to 1pm.
In just 90 minutes, about 25 individuals and teams braved the cold, windy morning to walk or ride the Northern Strand Trail to grocery stores in Malden, Everett, and Medford, purchasing requested food items. Families, couples, high school students, and Bike to the Sea staff and board members collected a total of 648 pounds of food for Bread of Life, with many items supporting the annual Francis and Barbara Brown Thanksgiving Dinner at Malden High School. Riders used a range of bikes and trailers, including electric cargo bikes, tandems, and single speeds.
Three Malden High Key Club members helped receive donations, packing them into boxes, weighing them on the floor scale, and recording the totals.
Prizes—including local bike shop gift certificates, a sailing experience, bike accessories, and Bike to the Sea merchandise—were awarded to individuals and teams who collected the most food by weight.
Bread of Life also received several cash donations from participants. Bike to the Sea provided pizza and beverages for everyone. Thank you to all who took part—your support means a lot to Bread of Life and Bike to the Sea. Join us next year for our 3rd Annual Cranksgiving!
Great effort to collect food for those dealing with food insecurity as you link the bicycle spokes with SNAP. Great job.
