We are a 2026 MassTrails Grant Program Grantee!

Exciting news for Massachusetts, all our Northern Strand Trail cities and towns, and Bike to the Sea! As one of the MassTrails grant recipients, Bike to the Sea has been awarded $19,307 to design and implement the Northern Strand Trail Wayfinding and Etiquette Signage Plan.

Bike to the Sea will plan and execute a series of workshops with community partners to develop a conceptual signage plan for

  • consistent wayfinding
  • reinforcing safety/trail etiquette along and adjacent to the Northern Strand Trail, from Everett to Nahant Beach

This conceptual signage plan will have four coordinated objectives:

  • Help trail users navigate along the trail and identify commercial, civic, and recreational destinations on and off the trail
  • Help people on local roads that bisect the trail discover it
  • Encourage safe and courteous behavior among trail users
  • Encourage safe and courteous interactions between trail users and motorists on roads that bisect the trail.

MassTrails provides grants to support recreational trail and shared-use pathway projects across the Commonwealth. MassTrails grants are REIMBURSEMENT grants, meaning grantees must first pay for expenditures and then submit for reimbursement using the required documentation. MassTrails grants are reviewed and recommended by the Governor’s Inter-Agency Trails Team and the Massachusetts Recreational Trails Advisory Board (MARTAB). more than $8.6 million will be awarded through the MassTrails grant program to support the creation, expansion and maintenance of public trails throughout Massachusetts.

“Each Massachusetts community is home to at least one public trail that gets residents outside and brings in visitors that help support small businesses. These grants will help improve and expand access to trails across our state so more people can enjoy the outdoors, stay active and explore new places. We’re proud to invest in projects that strengthen local communities and support our economy.” – Governor Maura Healey.
